The Pope & The Bishop

Pope Leo

The Pope is the global leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the Bishop of Rome. For millions of Catholics around the world, the Pope serves as a spiritual guide, teaching us how to live out the values of love, kindness, and community.
Living in Vatican City in Rome, the Pope travels globally to meet people, support communities, and advocate for peace and justice.
Key Roles of the Pope
  • Spiritual Leader: Guide the global Catholic community in faith and prayer.
  • Global Voice: Speak out on critical world issues like poverty, peace, and protecting the environment.
  • Teacher of Faith: Share messages of hope, helping schools and communities understand how to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Fun Facts for children:
  • The Name “Pope”: The word comes from papa, the Latin word for “father.”
  • A Global Leader: The Pope leads a community of over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide.
  • Catholic Education: The Pope deeply values young people and schools, reminding students to build their futures step by step, using their talents to help others. [1]

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough is currently overseen by the Right Reverend Marcus Stock, who serves as the Apostolic Administrator of Middlesbrough (alongside his role as the Bishop of Leeds). He was appointed to guide the Middlesbrough diocese in December 2025.
Our Diocesan Bishop & Vision
Our school is proud to be part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough, a vibrant community spanning a wide geographical area across Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland, Stockton-on-Tees, North Yorkshire, York, the East Riding of Yorkshire, and Kingston upon Hull.
As a Catholic school, we operate under the pastoral care and leadership of our Bishop, who acts as the first educator of the diocese.
Bishop Marcus Stock
  • Background: Born in London in 1961, Bishop Marcus was ordained a priest in 1988. He has a long-standing passion for Catholic education and serves nationally as the Chair of the Catholic Education Service.
  • Episcopal Motto: Desiderio desideravi (from Luke 22:15), which translates to “I have desired with desire to be with you.”
  • Role in our Schools: Bishop Marcus provides the guidance and framework that help our school fulfill its mission of making Christ known to all people.

The Bishop’s Vision for Education
The core vision guiding our school’s daily life, curriculum, and community ethos is:
“To make Christ known and loved, through the provision of excellent Catholic education and schools’ intent on finding Christ in their daily lives and sharing that encounter with others.”
