Religious Education

In Class 1 and 4 we follow the ‘Come and See’ Catholic Primary Religious Education Programme. Links are made with the children’s own experiences and the curriculum is adapted to make it purposeful for our children, always meeting them where they are in their spiritual experience.  RE is taught in all classes and, as required by the Bishops of England and Wales, 10% of curriculum time is allocated to teaching RE.

The topics for Class 1 and 4 follow the format as directed from the ‘Come and See’ programme:

  • Explore
  • Reveal
  • Respond

At the end of each theme, the children in Class 1 and 4 reflect on what they have learnt through class liturgies.

The programme is delivered through a series of themes:

Autumn Term themes are developed in the light of an understanding of Creation:

  •     Family «Domestic Church
  •     Belonging«Baptism/Confirmation
  •     Loving«Advent/Christmas

Spring Term themes are developed in the light of an understanding of Incarnation:

  •     Community«Local Church
  •     Relating«Eucharist
  •     Giving«Lent/Easter

Summer Term themes are developed in the light of an understanding of Redemption and the work of the Holy Spirit:

  •     Serving«Pentecost
  •     Inter-relating«Reconciliation
  •     World«Universal Church

Running alongside the ‘Come and See’ programme are a series of ‘Big Questions’ which are relevant to each RE topic. They demand a more active and engaging approach and encourage child lead enquiry and learning.

This year we are trailing a new programme in line with the updated Religious Directory in Class 2 and 3.  This will be reviewed at the end of the academic year.

The new programme for Class 2 and 3 is called ‘Be Still and Know ‘ and it is delivered through a series of six themes and each term ends with a period of reflection – a ‘Time with God’. Additionally, opportunities for ‘Stay and Pray’ events, a time to share our learning with
parents and carers are planned for.

The themes are returned to each year in at deeper level-

Autumn Term
 Creation & Covenant
 Prophecy & Promise

Spring Term
 Galilee to Jerusalem
 Desert to Garden

Summer Term
 To the Ends of the Earth
 Dialogue & Encounter

All years begin each new term with a two-week study on other religions (Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism or Islam)

A programme of Health and Relationships Education, ‘Ten Ten – Life to the Full’, is also in use throughout the school. See RSE page for further details.
